Since its inception, Nederlands Dans Theater has been a pioneer in contemporary dance. Nederlands Dans Theater has become one of the leading dance companies in the world. A rich repertoire has been developed with works from master choreographers Jiří Kylián and Hans van Manen, in addition to those from resident choreographers Sol León and Paul Lightfoot, associate choreographers Crystal Pite and Johan Inger and many other guest choreographers such as Ohad Naharin, Nacho Duato and William Forsythe. Under the direction of the artistic director Jim Vincent, Nederlands Dans Theater attracts full houses worldwide and is delighted to have an expanding and loyal audience in the UK due to their regular appearances at Sadler’s Wells and several other theatres across Britain.
Ballets choreographed for Nederlands Dans Theater are danced all over the world. Numerous dancers and choreographers that started with the company have gone on to set up their own dance companies world-wide, extending the influence of Nederlands Dans Theater across the globe.
Nederlands Dans Theater has two companies, with two generations of dancers.
Nederlands Dans Theater I
The main company was founded in 1959 and consists of 30 dancers. They vary in age from 23 to 42 and each one of them excels in their solo qualities. These phenomenal dancers and the multifaceted repertoire they bring to the stage attract full houses all over the world.
Nederlands Dans Theater II
Founded in 1978 for young upcoming talent with an astonishing technique and endless energy, Nederlands Dans Theater II currently consists of 16 dancers up to the age of 23. Nederlands Dans Theater II is a revolutionary breeding ground of talent and dances repertoire of established choreographers and new creations by upcoming choreography talents.
Nederlands Dans Theater also invests in education – of audiences, amateur dancers and of students. Workshops, master classes, introductions and other projects take place all over the world – wherever the company performs. In the UK in particular Nederlands Dans Theater has offered many workshops in collaboration with the theatres that invite us.
Move in by Nederlands Dans Theater – The Future
Funds generated thanks to the Dutch Masters Foundation will support Move in by Nederlands Dans Theater – a new initiative that will drive research, development and innovative ways of working with and looking at dance or movement.
Rather than being a distinct dance company like Nederlands Dans Theater I and II, Move in by Nederlands Dans Theater will be a vehicle for experimentation and to expose dance as a ‘movement medium’ to other influences, such as architecture, technology or medicine, in addition to other art forms, thereby challenging perceptions of what ‘dance’ is. ‘Move in by Nederlands Dans Theater’ will be a fund that is open to projects across disciplines to submit an application.
In this way, Nederlands Dans Theater aims to:
- encourage experimentation and cross-discipline working to stimulate innovation;
- challenge other art forms and disciplines through their involvement with dance and movement;
- engage new audiences not only by working with other disciplines but also by the media used to convey the results of collaborations whether they be in literature, the internet, or a hospital.
